PHT 5311C - Neuromuscular IHours: 2 This course provides the learner with clinical knowledge and skills in general examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and assessment of outcomes for diverse patient/client populations with neuromuscular conditions emphasizing deficits of the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, cerebellum, and demyelination of the central and peripheral nervous systems in a variety of practice settings. Knowledge and implications of the pathological effects of central and peripheral nervous system disease and injury are reviewed for interpretation of findings. Principles of neuroplasticity and clinical decision-making models are introduced to inform plan of care development including appropriate goal setting and interventions frameworks in these patient populations. The Physical Therapist Practice: Management Process from the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice and the International Classification of Function, Disability, and Health (ICF) Framework are utilized as a basis for examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, management, and outcome assessment. Students synthesize the concepts of clinical reasoning and clinical decision-making while incorporating evidence-based practice principles. The learner refines their ability to screen for conditions that may warrant a referral to other healthcare practitioners.
